“Turkey teeth”: the risks, and what to ask before you book
“Turkey teeth” usually means a full set of crowns or veneers done abroad. Many people are happy with the result; others are not. Here's what's been reported, with sources.
What the evidence says
- In a British Dental Association survey of 1,000 dentists for BBC News, 597 said they had treated patients with crown complications and seen patients who had treatment in Turkey. Nearly one in five said repair costs exceeded £5,000 (BBC, 2022).
- The BBC messaged clinics with a photo of a presenter's teeth: 70 of the 120 Turkish clinics that replied offered treatment that involved shaving down natural teeth; none of the 34 UK clinics that replied proposed veneers or crowns (BBC).
- The same report says crowns can involve filing 60–70% of the natural tooth, and increase the risk of root canals and extraction later.
- A UK patient told the BBC she paid £3,000 in cash for four implants in Antalya with a sinus lift and bone graft, then developed infections and spent £2,000 on private treatment at home (BBC, 2025).
Why it happens
- Crowns sold as veneers. More tooth removed than the patient expected.
- Short trips. Large cases done in days leave little time to fix problems.
- Aftercare at home. An NHS body told the BBC it is not usually able to correct complications from cosmetic or elective treatment done privately, in the UK or abroad, unless there is a clinical need (BBC, 2025).
Questions to ask any clinic
- Who exactly will treat me, and what is their licence and registration number?
- What is the written treatment plan, tooth by tooth, including whether each tooth gets a veneer or a crown?
- Which material, lab and implant brand will you use?
- What is included: scans, X-rays, temporaries, extractions, grafts, sedation, hotel, transfers?
- How many trips and how many days per trip?
- What guarantee do you give, and who pays for flights if something needs fixing?
- What records (X-rays, scans, implant details) will I take home for my own dentist?
Red flags
- A full-mouth plan from photos alone, with no X-rays or exam.
- Pressure to decide fast, or cash-only payment.
- No written guarantee or aftercare plan.
